We gather to remember any whom we love but see no longer. Gathering with a common experience of loss in a sacred space, as is traditional at this time of year, can be a powerful way to process, draw strength and grace and even to heal.
As we gather in the beautiful ancient church building at Hethel, we will worship together, remember the names of those we have lost and have opportunity to light a candle in memory of them. Those for whom we have conducted funerals in the last couple of years will be remembered, and any others requested.
We will take a list of names at the door as people arrive, or if you would like us to remember anyone in your absence, just let us know by emailing adrian@mulbchurch.org.uk ahead of time.

Last summer, all in the benefice were invited to think about where we were and where we were going. 31 people gathered, with all four villages represented. We considered: changes that we could anticipate locally and further afield; hopes and fears; finances, volunteering; prayer & witness; church buildings; expanding our work beyond Sundays; and things for PCCs to consider. It was really useful being able to listen to one another, pool ideas, take stock, and generally navigate rather than drift - and it has led to several changes in how we've done things over the last year.
So, in October, we'll meet again to review how we have done since then and hear about challenges coming our way. We'll split into smaller groups, each focused on one of the parishes, and try to formulate some achievable aims for each parish for the coming year.

This year our HARVEST SUPPER will be held onSaturday October 5th.,7pm (to eat at 7.30) in the Church/ Community Centre. This has always been a popular event. The Supper consists of cooked meats, jacket potatoes and salads, followed by an apple dessert (pies, crumbles and cakes). A free glass of wine or juice is included in the price. We had a meeting scheduled Wednesday evening, 21st, to review how we're doing as a benefice and think big picture thoughts moving forward, as a follow up to last year's summer strategy meeting. I am postponing the meeting until September. Although summer is a good time for me to step back and think big picture, when a lot of routine things are on pause, and there's generally a bit more space, it's also a time when a lot are away! Because lots of key people would miss the meeting and because unexpected things have happened to crowd out that space, so I am not as prepared as I would like, it will be better to meet in September. If you would like to be present and you have any dates you can't do in September, please let me know and I'll do my best to accommodate. Apologies for cancelling so close to the time. At Flordon Church's Annual Parochial Church Meeting, all members of the Electoral Roll are welcome.
We would love to see you in Flordon Church to celebrate all that we were able to accomplish last year, and all that we look forward to doing together this year, in the service of Christ and in the service of our communities. It is an occasion to celebrate, to receive fresh vision, and to elect representatives who can continue to carry the vision forward.
It is also a time for any church members, electoral roll members or regular worshipers, to raise any issues that they wish the church council to address. The floor will be open.

Christians believe that Jesus died at 3pm on that terrible but wonderful day 2000 years ago, the day we remember on Good Friday. So this event commemorates his last 60 minutes as a man on Planet Earth.
We meet at the Village Sign on the north of the Common, or outside the Rectory.
We will walk with the cross past as many homes in the village as we can within two hours, coming back to the village sign, where we will erect a cross, hear some Bible readings, say some prayers and sing a song.
Hot cross buns and drinks served in Harvest House afterwards.
Anyone is welcome to join us for the whole walk, for a part of it, or meet us at about noon at the village sign for the public act of worship, or in Harvest House for a bun!
The route we will walk is shown below, so you can work out roughly when to expect us, if you want to join as we walk past your house.

Come and enjoy a 'chorale' drawn from Mulbarton Community Choir singing some of their wide and growing range of songs, accompanied by the inimitable Laurie Bennett. What could be better on a chilly March Sunday afternoon than 40 minutes of music, a spacious interval with tea (coffee or chocolate) and as much home-made cake as you can eat, followed by another half-hour of music? You'll do some good as well because your ticket price will kick-off the church's charitable giving for 2024 and add to the fund we've started to repair the timberwork in the tower and bring the bell back into operation. Ash Wednesday marks the start of the observation of Lent, a season of self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study, and preparation for Easter. Lent is often described as lasting forty days (excluding Sundays) which recalls the Biblical account of Jesus’s temptation in the wilderness (Luke 4.1-13).
Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence. From the Middle Ages onward it has been a custom to begin Lent by having the sign of the cross marked on one’s forehead in ash.

‘Together’ is a new venture in Mulbarton.
Every fourth Sunday at 6pm there is a light supper of bread and cheese to enjoy at Harvest House. At 7pm there is a short, reflective Evening Prayer in church drawing on contemplative, Celtic, Northumbrian traditions.

Sarah McCrum was a treasured part of the fellowship herre in Mulbarton, and will be greatly missed.
All are welcome at Mulbarton Church this Friday to honour her memory in a special service of thanksgiving, which will follow a short ceremony at the graveside, as we lay Sarah to rest with her beloved Michael.

Come and join us for a choir led and candle lit Christmas concert at St Nicholas Church, Bracon Ash. The choir has been carefully curated by classical singer Humphrey Berney and is set to be a beautiful and intimate event. Doors open at 6:30pm for refreshments. Tickets are available at £15 per person, which includes refreshments. Money will go towards the urgent repair work on the roof of this beautiful Grade 1 listed building.

Everything needed will be provided, including oranges, candles, ribbon, sweets, lots of fun and laughter, and a wonderful beginning to the Christmas season. Loved by children and adults alike, this candlelit celebration is a fabulous way to help bring light and hope to children living in poverty in this country, through the work of the Children’s Society. Biscuits and drinks are served afterwards.

Norfolk Churches Trust's Annual Bike Ride is a great way to raise money to support our county's churches, and have fun while doing so! Visit as many churches as you can during the day - on foot, on bike, on horseback, canoe, or any other way you want to. Make sure you keep a note of the churches you visit, take loads of photos, and you might win a prize! Get your friends to sponsor you and then we will share the money you raise with a church of your choice. Over the years we have raised over £2million.

"Beating the Bounds" is an ancient tradition and, for us, a great opportunity to walk around our villages together, praying for our neighbours, the land, the crops, the work of local farmers and all the activities which make up our village life.
All welcome to meet on the verge outside Hethel Church at 2.30 pm to begin our walk. Dogs welcome too!
Christians believe that Jesus died at 3pm on that terrible but wonderful day 2000 years ago, the day we remember on Good Friday. So this event commemorates his last 60 minutes as a man on Planet Earth.
We meet at the Village Sign on the north of the Common, and will walk with the cross past almost every house in the village, coming back to the village sign, where we will erect a cross, hear some Bible readings, say some prayers and sing a song.
Covid safety allowing, we hope to serve hot cross buns in Harvest House afterwards.
Anyone is welcome to join us for the whole walk, for a part of it, or meet us at about noon at the village sign for the public act of worship, or in Harvest House for a bun!

So, to support our ‘Prayerful’ focus in the Vision’s first year, I’m offering a prayer a day during this Lenten season. Once again, because I’ve decided to include the six Sundays of Lent (and to end with Easter Day itself), that’s actually 47 (not 40) prayers!
How have I chosen the prayers? Well, some of my choices have been triggered by special days in the calendar or by biblical readings set for that day. Others have emerged out of what’s going on in the world around us. I’ve deliberately spread the net wide and drawn on prayers from across the globe, centuries and traditions. Each prayer will be accompanied by a reflection, an image and often by a musical setting too.
The word "tenebrae" comes from the Latin meaning "darkness" or "shadows". The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian Holy Week service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of that week from the triumphant Palm Sunday entry through Jesus' burial.
This increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus' death and of hopelessness in the world without God. The service concludes in darkness, with a final candle, representing Christ, carried out of the church, symbolizing the death of Jesus.
It is a simple service, with 6 candles, 8 readings, some music and some silence. A loud noise may also sound symbolizing the closing of Jesus' tomb. The worshipers then leave in silence to ponder the events of Holy Week, the impact of Christ's death and the expectation of the coming Resurrection.

A Special service marking the beginning of Lent, in contemporary language, with traditional hymns. There will be opportunity to receive ash daubed on the forehead, and also to receive communion.
Our tea and crumpet stall is open in church! In fact, it was the toasted teacakes that flew off the shelves in January, so if you prefer, they'll be available too. Both with, of course, lashings of butter, honey, golden syrup, jam - whatever. 2pm to 5pm.
The weather looks good, so come for a pleasant afternoon stroll and break your journey with refreshments in a warm church with soothing music wafting round. You may even wish to say a prayer for world peace while you're here – the Church of England has asked all churches to make Sunday a day of prayer for peace. We'll put some resources out to make it easy for you to spend a few moments at the front in silent prayer if (and only if) you wish.
We'll also be serving on Sunday 27 March. This happens to be Mothering Sunday and there'll be some traditional simnel cake for mums of all ages.
Our carols by candlelight service is going ahead, despire the COVID situation having changed a bit in the last few days.
First, the Mulbarton Community Choir committee has decided that it would be unwise to sing or practice at all over the next few weeks, a decision which we completely respect. So they won't be singing for us on Sunday, or in the Mulbarton village event on the 19th.
We will follow all government guidelines for the event, which principally amounts to face coverings being required at all times except when eating and drinking (we plan to go ahead with drinks and mince pies afterwards).
If you have booked but are uneasy about coming, again, the decision is yours. If you can let me know, please do, but now that the choir en masse is no longer coming, I doubt we will be short of seats and in need of rebooking any no longer needed.
Whatever, the church has been beautifully decorated and is open for visits at any time.

This year, to keep as safe as possible with regard to covid, and especially in view of the commendable growth in the Mulbarton scouting sections, we are seeking to spread the opportunities to remember around different churches. We are planning the following Remembrance events, to which all are welcome:
10am Remembrance Sunday Service at Mulbarton Church, to which Mulbarton cubs, scouts and explorers are also invited.
10:30am Remembrance Sunday Service at Flordon Church, to which rainbows, brownies, guides and rangers are also invited.

Join us for a special service, as we remember those we have loved and lost.
With traditional hymns and an opportunity to light a candle in memory of a lost loved one, this is a special benefice occasion, as we continue to pray our goodbyes. If you would like a name read out during the service, there will be someone writing down names at the door as you come in, or you can let Adrian know ahead of time.

In 1900 trams arrived on Norwich’s streets. They were greeted with awe as a technological wonder that not only revolutionised travel but also radically changed the City.Using a combination of images, archive material and contemporary accounts Frances & Michael Holmes will illustrate that the story of the trams is about so much more than a vehicle – It is the story of how that vehicle transformed our city.
Harvest Thanksgiving for Hethel and Bracon Ash will be on 3 October at 11am followed by Harvest Lunchafterwards in the church.
The Jolly Farmers (Forncett St Mary) will deliver a choice of hot dishes as happened very successfully in 2018 and there will be several home-made puddings on offer. Two courses, a glass of wine, tea or coffee afterwards, with reduced prices for children.

Our first Sunday service back in Hanover Lounge since February 2020, nineteen months ago!
It is also our first Harvest service of the season, in which we receive gifts for Norwich foodbank, and any monetary donations will go to support the good work being done by our mission partner, Tearfund.
It is important that we continue to be mindful about the risk of coronavirus, and do what we can to keep as safe as possible. To this end, we will keep the lounge as well ventilated as we can, and will arrange the seating to allow as much space between people as possible.
We ask that people do wear masks. We are advised that mask-wearing is the most significant action we can take to mitigate the spread of the virus, when meeting indoors.
We will be serving refreshments in the lounge after the service - hot drinks and biscuits - and have thought about how to do this as safely as possible.
It will be a joy to be together again after such a long break, and we look forward to re-engaging with the simplicty, comfort, friendship and meaningful God moments we have come to expect with Church @ Hanover.

Norfolk Churches Trust's Annual Bike Ride is a great way to raise money to support our county's churches, and have fun while doing so! Visit as many churches as you can during the day - on foot, on bike, on horseback, canoe, or any other way you want to. Make sure you keep a note of the churches you visit, take loads of photos, and you might win a prize! Get your friends to sponsor you and then we will share the money you raise with a church of your choice. Over the years we have raised over £2million, and in 2020 we raised an amazing £175,000. More than in any other year. Let's see if we can beat this in 2021!

You may have said goodbye to a loved one over lockdown, or you may be grieving a loss of another kind. All Saints, Hethel has organised a ‘Celebration of Creation’ weekend on 26-27 June, 2021 to which all in the locality are welcome.
The weekend will begin at 4.15am with a short walk to enjoy the burning sunrise followed by a leisurely wander listening for birdsong with local ornithologist Mike Harvey.
Brother Sam, past leader of the European Province of the Society of Saint Francis, will also join the weekend. Many people will have heard of St Francis of Assisi who had an extraordinary ability to commune with nature, to see its beauty and to sense the interconnectedness of all things under God. On Saturday, Brother Sam will read St Francis’ “swansong”, Canticle of the Creatures, after sunrise; he will give a keynote talk and lead a ‘Five Senses Walk’ in the afternoon as well as preaching on Sunday and repeating the walk.
On Saturday evening the building will be cleared for a ceilidh – the first ever so far as is known! – led by Suffolk band Skylarking, while Sunday also offers a walk with eminent naturalist Dr Anne Edwards BEM.
Throughout the weekend Hethel church will house an ‘exhibition of beauty’: photographs, paintings, craft objects, flower arrangements, fragrances and music.
Hethel Church is one of only two churches in the county to have achieved Silver standard in the national EcoChurch scheme. There will be a display explaining the scheme and how Hethel ticked the necessary boxes.
We pray that this weekend will be a lot of fun and will help us all to rejoice at the natural beauty that surrounds us: from Hethel Churchyard, full of wildflowers and associated prolific insect life in late June, to the exhibition and the music and dancing of the ceilidh. Having Brother Sam SSF help us explore the spiritual side of creation care is a massive bonus. Co-author of the recently published ‘Seeing Differently’, he’s a national figure who speaks widely and participates in online seminars such as St Paul’s Cathedral’s recent ‘Is Covid-19 a wake up call to us?’ We expect to be challenged as well as interested and encouraged!”

COVID-19 update: If on 21.6.21 all restrictions are not lifted as expected on the ‘roadmap’, most activities can legally go ahead with minimal change. If it proves impossible to hold the ceilidh, tickets bought will be reimbursed, or it will happen later in the year as a stand-alone event.
Brother Samuel SSF was Guardian of Hillfield Friary for many years, where he led the Hillfield Project on living in an ecologically sustainable way following St Francis’ vision of creation. It is now a mixed community of professed religious brothers and lay men and women, young, old, married and single. Br. Sam has been Minister of the European Province of the Society of Saint Francis (SSF) and in 2016 his outstanding service was recognised by Archbishop Justin through the Dunstan Award for Prayer and the Religious Life. With his Franciscan co-authors, Br. Sam’s 2021 book, Seeing Differently explores and explains how Franciscans see creation.
Dr Anne Edwards BEM is a plant scientist based at the John Innes Centre who was the first person in the UK to identify Ash Dieback disease in England. Anne also works on grass pea, one of the oldest known crops, seeking to develop a toxin-free variety that can be used as a main crop by smallholder farmers in Europe, Africa and the Indian sub-continent. In 2015 Anne was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to the environment. For three decades, she has advised on and, with a team of volunteers, managed Hethel’s biodiversity-award-winning churchyard.
Mike Harvey spent many years travelling the world working for Cable and Wireless, which gave him the opportunity to specialise in the birds of the West Indies, and, later, birds in West Africa. Since retirement he has made numerous visits to see the birds of Europe. He has volunteered with Norfolk Wildlife Trust for over a decade, leading monthly wildlife walks in different places all over the county. He also grows cacti at home! It is not surprising that he can modestly claim familiarity “with the songs of most of our birds here in Norfolk”.
Eco Church is the award scheme for churches in England and Wales who want to demonstrate that the gospel is good news for God’s earth. An online survey asks probing questions about how a church looks after buildings and land; about its engagement with its local community and global campaigns; and about the personal lifestyles of the congregation.

The word "tenebrae" comes from the Latin meaning "darkness" or "shadows". The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian Holy Week service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of that week from the triumphant Palm Sunday entry through Jesus' burial.
This increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus' death and of hopelessness in the world without God. The service concludes in darkness, with a final candle, representing Christ, carried out of the church, symbolizing the death of Jesus.
It is a simple service, with 7 candles, 8 readings, some music and some silence. A loud noise may also sound symbolizing the closing of Jesus' tomb. The worshipers then leave in silence to ponder the events of Holy Week, the impact of Christ's death and the expectation of the coming Resurrection.

Join us by Zoom on Mothering Sunday for a special interactive and creative session for all ages, celebrating motherhood, using craft, music and interactive prayers.
We will be focusing on the story of baby Moses, placed in a basket among the bulrushes and adopted into Pharoah's family.

A global wave of prayer from Ascension Day to Pentecost
For 11 days, Christians from all denominations around the world commit to spending special time in prayer for the people they know as well as the whole world as we shine a light on the darkness of this world. This finishes on the Day of Pentecost - the great celebration of the coming of the promised Holy Spirit. This has been happening for a few years now but this year is a bit different – for obvious reasons! To celebrate Christians joining in prayer this year we are combining forces, and encouraging everyone to join in with opportunities locally, in the deanery (collection of local churches, from Hingham to Cringleford) as well as the wider diocese, and national and global church.
We are invited to pray with Christians worldwide for God’s Spirit to empower OURSELVES to be witnesses for Jesus Christ and for OTHER PEOPLE to come to know Jesus. Each day there is a theme – pray about that theme for YOURSELF and for OTHERS (maybe 5 – friends, family, neighbours) that they may be drawn closer to Jesus. Readings are added to help you think about each theme.

As a deanery we are asking people to sign up to slots to pray. You can pray however you would like to – that might be doing a prayer walk around your area, opening up the Pentecost Story and asking God to work like that once more, sitting in silence, colouring, drawing, listening to music…however you pray – pray.

Finally there is an interactive map and VR game for mobile devices available! This is really fun (especially enjoyable is the sheep game) but also great at helping to get people thinking about prayer. We began with an introductory session on Tuesday 21st April, with the course starting properly this week, 28th April. Course books are required for the 28th, but not for the introductory session.
The first session tackles the topic of "The problem of emotional unhealthy spirituality".
This course is a safe and simple way to practice slowing down to be with Jesus, and to look underneath the surface of what is going on in our lives. There is no pressure to participate in any way that would be uncomfortable - it is very much the sort of thing that you will get out what you put in, and you can engage with it on whatever level fits where you are. The course draws from significant age-old streams of Christian thinking and insight, and offers practical insights into how we can apply that thinking to deepen our own devotional lives.

I invited people in leadership positions throughout the benefice to work through this course with me in Autumn 2019. Seventeen people from our group of churches participated in the 8-week course. From the feedback given, here are some of the things they found helpful:
Good fellowship and good company - great way to connect with others
Helpful group "rules" that made for a truly safe space to explore the nitty-gritty of our lives (but no compulsion) and to deepen understanding of how to walk with Jesus
A range of learning materials to embed and reinforce the teaching
Genuinely helpful input on Sabbath and daily offices
Forty days of devotionals that gave achievable, balanced, rich times of waiting on God in 10-minute chunks
Guilt-free rhythms of praying
Help to be intentional and embrace the commitment needed to deepen a walk with God
Searching material, helping both to understand oneself better and to develop better devotional habits and emotional health
Greater peace and freedom that has lasted
Here's what one participant had to say: "I found the course very helpful in establishing a good, flexible 'routine' of quality time with God on my own, along with a mindfulness of God during my days - feeling generally closer and connected. The EHS book, Day by Day readings and workbook were all helpful, along with the discussion times and DVD. We begin with an introductory session on Tuesday 21st April, with the course starting properly the following week, 28th April. Course books are required for the 28th, but not for the introductory session.
This course is a safe and simple way to practice slowing down to be with Jesus, and to look underneath the surface of what is going on in our lives. There is no pressure to participate in any way that would be uncomfortable - it is very much the sort of thing that you will get out what you put in, and you can engage with it on whatever level fits where you are. The course draws from significant age-old streams of Christian thinking and insight, and offers practical insights into how we can apply that thinking to deepen our own devotional lives.

I invited people in leadership positions throughout the benefice to work through this course with me in Autumn 2019. Seventeen people from our group of churches participated in the 8-week course. From the feedback given, here are some of the things they found helpful:

Good Friday Meditative Service - Stations of the Cross

An interactive online Zoom meeting, in which we encounter and respond to the 12 stations of the Cross, with artwork, Bible readings, reflections and prayers.
Our final evening, exploring what has been a remarkably relevant and apt course for such a time as this. We will explore what it means to make connections in the power of the Holy Spirit, following Jesus' example, by considering further the story of the lame man healed outside the Temple.

The word "tenebrae" comes from the Latin meaning "darkness" or "shadows". The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian Holy Week service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of that week from the triumphant Palm Sunday entry through Jesus' burial.
This increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus' death and of hopelessness in the world without God. The service concludes in darkness, with a final candle, representing Christ, carried out of the church, symbolizing the death of Jesus.
It is a simple service, with 7 candles, 8 readings, some music and some silence. A loud noise may also sound symbolizing the closing of Jesus' tomb. The worshipers then leave in silence to ponder the events of Holy Week, the impact of Christ's death and the expectation of the coming Resurrection.
Pour yourself a coffee, fire up Zoom, using the link above, and enjoy some fellowship with others, before watching this week's video together, and then splitting into different virtual rooms to discuss the theme.
All are welcome to join me for a service of worship at 10am tomorrow morning. We'll hear something from Ram, and encouragements in the midst of this strange time, as well as continuing our journey in the Paraclesis course, with a "Healing" theme, considering the woman in the temple, from Luke 13:10-17.

On Sunday 26 January (the 4thSunday of the month) we will be gathering again for our Family Service at Hethel Church at the new time of 2.30 pm.
This service is particularly suited to younger children.
We will be singing songs, playing instruments, finding all sorts of things in our treasure box and saying a prayer together as we find out more about light and Jesus, the Light of the world.
The service will be approximately 30 minutes in length with a snack offered afterwards for those who would like to stay. Please feel free to bring a snack of your children’s choice if you prefer.

During this time we will have an opening prayer, followed by a short Bible reading. There will then be a period of approximately 20 minutes Quiet Time with God, which may take the form of silent prayer, meditation or simply sitting in quiet reflection in God’s presence.
At the end of this time, there will be an opportunity to share any thoughts, feelings or insights and a short prayer, as well as refreshment. (However if you wish to leave before that’s perfectly fine).

The Church of England invests billions of pounds and, guess what, these are concerns that are shared by pension fund managers.
In the CofE's case, there has been some public concern about energy companies that continue to extract fossil fuels with no investment in renewables. To divest or not to divest, that is the question. The current position is not to divest, and use shareholder pressure to bring about change.
This coming Saturday, 19th October, Edward Carter, vicar of St Peter Mancroft, is coming to converse with us about God and Money. I say 'converse' rather than 'speak' because I know that Edward wants to make it more of a dialogue than a lecture.
Edward is a Trustee of the Church of England’s CBF Funds (which has around £2bn of church money under investment!). He also serves on the Ethical Investment Advisory Group of the Church of England. He will help us learn more about the church and its money, and help us with the whole concept of investing our own wealth for the benefit of others as well as ourselves.

Brother Roger, founder of the community in 1940, said “God is love alone” and this is the heart of Taizé. Rachel Burchell will lead us in an evening to learn a bit more about the community, its work and what it means to visit. We'll learn one or two songs, have a drink and a nibble before we worship together, experiencing this love in peace, space, silence and music. This event is for all four of our churches, together with those on the fringes who have an interest in 'spirituality'. Do come.

The Taizé Community in central France is an ecumenical Christian monastic fraternity of more than one hundred multi-national brothers from a variety of traditions. Taizé has become one of the world's most important sites of Christian pilgrimage, with a focus on youth. Over 100,000 young people from around the world make pilgrimages each year for prayer, Bible study, sharing, and communal work. Through the community's ecumenical outlook, they are encouraged to live in the spirit of kindness, simplicity and reconciliation.

'Walk' - Beating the Bounds(2:30pm): This is a two-hour wander around the boundaries of the Parish, stopping here and there to pray for the people and enterprises of Hethel. Everyone is welcome (Adults, children and dogs!)
'Eat' - Tea at Church (4:30pm): Following our walk, please feel free to join us for refreshments in Hethel Church
'Pray' - Evening Prayer (5:00pm): Our time together conlcudes with a short and simple service of Evening Prayer, including well known hymns, led by our Curate, The Revd Andrew North.

4th Sunday @ 4 is a short (about 40 minutes) family service which we do together. There is a simple structure to the service which comprises songs, a Bible reading, various activities, a short talk and prayers followed by refreshments. We aim for as much participation as possible (!) but anyone is welcome to come and simply enjoy. There is a soft toy area for very young children. A great place to meet other families.
This month Andrew will be leading us through the account of Jesus feeding the 5,000!

An informal time telling the Easter story as we each create a small Easter garden of our very own. Mums, Dads, grandparents welcome to enjoy hot drinks and hot cross buns or to join in. We meet at the bottom of Catmere Herne, on Cuckoofield Road, and will walk up with the cross, to Harvest House, pausing to sing and pray at various stops along the way. There will be the opportunity to pray together at Mulbarton Church at the end of the walk, where Andrew will be arriving with his cross. Hot cross buns will be served afterwards in Harvest House.
We recall the last supper that Jesus shared with his closest friends. After receiving bread and wine in memory of this, we'll continue with relaxed and informal contemporary worship, and listening to God. There will be an opportunity to pray for one another.

Messy Church leaps back into action in 2019 with our first gathering in February half term on Thursday 21 February. We will meet in Mulbarton Primary School from 10 am to 12 noon. We have a lot of fun and usually get quite messy exploring a Bible story through crafts, activities, acting out the story, song and prayer. We draw everything together with lunch, which is provided. Do come along and join in, meet other families and find out more about how we can follow Jesus in our everyday lives. Cost: £1 for each adult and child to cover costs.

Mike Leigh’s portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre. Government forces charged into a crowd of over 60,000 people who had gathered in a peaceful protest against rising levels of poverty and to demand political reform. Many protesters were killed and hundreds more injured, sparking a nationwide outcry but also further government suppression. The Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy which also played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper. Starring Maxine Peake and Rory Kinnear.

It is 1959, and widowed Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to open up a bookshop in the sleepy seaside town of Hardborough. When she exposes the narrow minded townsfolk to the best literature of the day including Nabokov's scandalizing "Lolita" and Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451", she gains a kindred spirit and ally in the figure of Mr Brundish (Bill Nighy), who is himself sick of the town's stale atmosphere, but has to reckon with the hostility of the other shopkeepers and of self-appointed doyenne Mrs Gamart (Patricia Clarkson).

Mulbarton Church will be open to visitors on the evening before All Saints Day (also known as All Hallows Day). There will be an opportunity to light a candle to remember a lost loved one, and say a quiet prayer. There will also be sweets and a blessing card to take away, freely available. Children and adults alike are invited to drop in for a couple of minutes any time between 5:30 and 8:30, where your local vicar, Adrian, will be present to welcome visitors.
Come and join in with Messy Church during half term on Thursday 25 October at Mulbarton Primary School between 10 am and 12 noon. Explore "What is really important in my life?" through crafts and Jesus' story of the Prodigal Son. Introductory activities, a variety of crafts, an action packed Bible story, song and prayer time and then lunch together. Cost £1 per person (adult and child). There are now specific dates we can pray for and the process has become clear! The initial large membership of the Vacancy in See Committee will be reduced to six on October 16th who go forward to work with the national nomination committee, The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Prime Minister’s Office and the Queen’s staff. The six are elected from those already on the Committee. Please pray for clear leading and discernment and that the right people for Norfolk are chosen.
The full committee meets in Norfolk on 28th August, 2nd October and 16th October.
There is a PUBLIC MEETING Consultation to be held for all Norfolk people on 3rd October 7.30 pm at the Cathedral. Please do come to make your voice heard, and please do pray.
We are asked to think about the kind of person we want but also what we want candidates to know about Norfolk.
We are also asked to pray this prayer whenever we can, to cover the whole process in God’s blessing. It may take some time as there are a number of Bishoprics in vacancy at present. Please pray for the staff who will have to cover the work in Bishop Graham’s absence after February 2019.

What is a Bishop (Feel free to edit as appropriate)
1.Every bishop is the chief pastor of all that are within his diocese, laity as well as clergy, and their father in God; it appertains to his office to teach and to uphold sound and wholesome doctrine, and to banish and drive away all erroneous and strange opinions; and, himself an example of righteous and godly living, it is his duty to set forward and maintain quietness, love, and peace among all men.
2. Every bishop has within his diocese jurisdiction as Ordinary except in places and over persons exempt by law and custom.
3. Every bishop is, within his diocese, the principal minister, and to him belongs the right, save in places and over persons exempt by law or custom, of celebrating the rites of ordination and confirmation; of conducting, ordering, controlling, and authorising all services in churches, chapels, churchyards and consecrated burial grounds; ... of being president of his diocesan synod.
Ministry in the wider Church and Nation
The role of bishops is not confined to their own dioceses. As the statement at ordination services makes clear, the ‘special responsibility to maintain and further the unity of the Church, to uphold its discipline, and to guard its faith’ is one which bishops share with their fellow bishops, and they are to promote the mission of the Church ‘throughout the world’. They are members of the College of Bishops at the provincial and national levels and attend the Lambeth Conference of all the bishops in the Anglican Communion.
All diocesan bishops are members of the House of Bishops of the General Synod and therefore share in responsibility for the leadership of the Church of England nationally and for relationships between the Church of England and the Church in other countries. Beyond their formal synodical role, diocesan bishops tend to be the public face of the Church in the eyes of the media and therefore perform an important communications role. Most diocesan bishops carry particular national responsibilities, chairing committees or boards within the National Church Institutions, ecumenically, or in connection with religious charities.
The Archbishops of Canterbury and York and the Bishop of London are privy counsellors. They are also members of the House of Lords, as are the Bishops of Durham and Winchester and twenty-one of the other diocesan bishops in England, Bishops may also be invited to contribute their experience or expertise to the deliberations of national government or regional bodies on particular issues. Diocesan bishops will thus also be called upon sooner or later to play a leading part in national life and to represent not just their dioceses but also their regions at the national level.
It is important that all who are involved in the process for choosing diocesan bishops bear in mind not just the role of diocesan bishops in their own dioceses, but also the ministry which they are called upon to exercise nationally and, in many cases, internationally as well

We begin our new series exploring the theme: How can I make a difference in the world? God made a beautiful, amazing world. But it is getting messed up. What can we do to help? How can we make a difference through our own choices and actions?
There will be crafts and activities, time to talk about what concerns us, an opportunity to help act out the Bible story, sing, pray and eat together. In fact, loads to to! We conclude our time together with a light lunch.

As a special addition to the beauty of the building, visitors during Open Churches Fortnight can also see the results of some brilliant research by local historians, namely a display of the fruits of our labours to identify all the men recorded on our memorial for WW1 (16 names) and the other 74 men recorded on the Roll of Honour of those who went to War.
Meet the bats – a talk, a walk and a listen around Hethel Church
For a number of years, Hethel Conservation Churchyard has hosted an annual bat survey. In recent years 11 species have been heard.
Bat Conservation Trust volunteer – and local expert – Jane Harris will give an illustrated talk and will bring some bats in her care to show while refreshments are served. At dusk (around 9pm), equipped with bat detectors, she and her team will lead groups on a short walk around the church and into nearby woodland to listen for what's about.

We are going to be drawing our Old Testament series to a close with God's friend Nehemiah who rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem. Lots of hands on activities, a re-telling of the story, a song, prayers and then lunch together. We appreciate a donation of £1 per person (adult and child) help us cover the cost of resources. Jamie is a local worship leader, with an inspiring story, who will be bringing a team to help with the worship and sharing a message about discovering our identity as beloved children of God.
Over the last 13 years, Jamie has been leading worship teams at different churches and at various events and conferences. he has been on several mission trips to Africa and Europe, and served on leadership teams within Alive Church in Norwich, and local ministries including the BURN 24-7 movement, Hope for Justice, and HeartBeat prophetic ministries. He is passionate about seeing people realise their identity as Children of God and to grow in Him. Jamie writes:
"My hearts desire is to see the kingdom of God manifest in every area of society. For me this starts in my own home where I father my four children. I have seen God perform many miracles with my children including healing my youngest son of a number of serious medical conditions including brain damage and epilepsy. I am so excited to be with you and to share what the Lord has laid on my heart for you."
We gather at 6:30pm at Mulbarton Church, for sung worship, hearing from Jamie, and a chance to respond and be prayed with.

The word "tenebrae" comes from the Latin meaning "darkness" or "shadows". The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian Holy Week service that makes use of gradually diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles to symbolize the events of that week from the triumphant Palm Sunday entry through Jesus' burial.
This increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus' death and of hopelessness in the world without God. The service concludes in darkness, with a final candle, representing Christ, carried out of the church, symbolizing the death of Jesus.
It is a simple service, with 6 candles, 8 readings, some music and some silence. A loud noise may also sound symbolizing the closing of Jesus' tomb.
The worshipers then leave in silence to ponder the events of Holy Week, the impact of Christ's death and the expectation of the coming Resurrection.

Those who come are free to move between activities as they wish, or simply sit at a table and chat.
£1.50 on the door which covers the cost of hiring the hall, all activities and several hotdogs.
4th Sunday @ 4 is a short (about 40 minutes) family service which we do together.
There is a simple structure to the service which comprises songs, a Bible reading, various activities, a short talk and prayers followed by refreshments. We aim for as much participation as possible (!) but anyone is welcome to come and simply enjoy. There is a soft toy area for very young children. A great place to meet other families.

An invitation to everyone providing an opportunity to get to know and encourage the Hanover gardeners and residents. The Hanover Gardens Gardening Club is holding a quiz evening on Saturday 17 March at 6.30 pm for a 7.00 pm start in the Residents' Lounge. Their aim is to provide a fun evening for residents and members of the community.
The cost is low at only £1 per person. There may also be a raffle. Any proceeds from the evening will go towards the gardens at Hanover.
If you can get a team together that would be great but if you come on your own you will be welcome to join one of the teams.
There will be snacks to nibble on during the evening and hot drinks available. If you would like something other than tea or coffee please feel free to bring your own bottle (and bottle opener).

Last year we enjoyed a talk by Frances and Michael Holmes on Norwich Market, this year they are coming back to talk to us about Norwich 1945 – 1960 A Journey from Austerity to Posterity, which is the title of their latest book. They are very entertaining speakers and much in demand so we are fortunate to have them back with us in March.

Our story this time in the series of "God's friends" (characters in God's story who prepared the way for Jesus) is about Samuel.
This is the story of the young boy Samuel who hears God speaking to him at an early age. He grows up to be one of God's leaders who was guided by God to find the shepherd boy David, who would become King.
Lots of crafts, activities, story, song and prayers.
There is also a space with soft cushions and toys suitable for the very young.
A Special service marking the beginning of Lent, in contemporary language, with traditional hymns. There will be opportunity to receive ash daubed on the forehead, and also to receive communion.

Come and join us as we explore the next story in our series of "God's Friends", which is about Caleb and Joshua entering the promised land. We explore the story with a range of fun (and sometimes messy) crafts. There is also a soft area where babies can feel comfortable.
We wrap the craft time up by using the crafts to tell the story, and then we share a delicious buffet lunch.
Messy Church is a fun and interactive way for all the family to explore the Christian faith. There are Bible stories, creative activities, songs and even a light lunch!

Then the Welcome afternoon is designed for you. We have representatives from village groups and activities and info from many others. We hope to cover everything that goes on in the village if we can. It is a chance to meet people over a cuppa and a cake.
The Welcome afternoon takes place on Saturday 7th October in Hanover Gardens Lounge. Drop in any time betweeen 3pm - 5pm. Look out for the signs near the Coop on Cuckoofield Lane or email Sue Mellows on sue@sysue.co.uk for more info and an invite. There will be activities provided for children.

A day for all four parishes in our group to gather together, worship together, think together, pray together, play together and eat together.
Folk from the four parishes are welcome to join in with as much of the programme as they would like to, as we explore fresh vision and values together, and begin charting a course for a new chapter in our shared journey.
We'll present the outcome of our process of discerning vision and values, which will help us in setting direction, making decisions, communicating what we're about, and in uniting our common life across the benefice.
Please let us know if you would like to stay for the fish and chip supper in the evening, so we can be sure to have enough food for everyone. A contribution for food costs on the day would be welcome.

The Bike Ride has raised around £2,800,000 over the past 32 years. The money has been divided between the church of the participant’s choice and The Norfolk Churches Trust, which gives grants to hundreds of churches for repairs, renovation and the conservation of their buildings. More than 600 churches will be open throughout the day for everyone to explore.
If you'd like to go on foot, by bike or by car in order to raise money for the NCT and your local church, please collect a sponsorship form from your parish representative, or from your local church.

Simply, an opportunity to relax with good company of a summer's evening, with cheese and wine. If the weather is good, we can spill out into the garden - if not, we can be indoors.
Please let us know if you'd like to come along, so we can make sure we have sufficient. No compulsion to bring anything, but do let us know if you'd plan to bring some cheese or wine to add to the pot.

This will be the first ever service of Holy Communion which our curate, The Revd Andrew North, will lead following his ordination as Priest. During this family friendly service, our guest speaker The Revd Sam Hustwayte will be helping us to explore the theme of "welcome" in a fun and engaging way. We are also very excited that our sung worship will be led by Mulbarton Community Choir and accompanied by Laurie Bennett.
Everyone is welcome to join us for this special service, especially noisy children! The service will last about 75mins.
Following the service, everyone is warmly invited to join us for a picnic on The Common.

Thy Kingdom Come is a global prayer initiative, with various events happening all over the world!
At Hethel Church we're putting on an event with which is especially for those who aren’t good at praying!
So, drop in to Hethel Church on Sunday 28th May, between 3 and 5pm to pray for the world... with art… craft… music… words… silence… alone… together… with people across the globe. Adults, children, separately, together. All are welcome!
Bring your teddies, complete with parachute, to church any time from 10am. Teddies will be launched from the church tower at 12noon.
Entrance is free!
There are 3 age categories (pre-school, primary and secondary), and 2 prizes up for grabs in each category. There is a prize for the best-looking teddy and parachute, and there is a prize for the teddy that flies the furthest.
There will be 2 bonus prizes for the most dramatic descent, and the most effort, across all age ranges.
Families are welcome to bring packed lunches, or enjoy a burger from the stall in the churchyard. Drinks and cakes will also be available in Harvest House.
You'll find plenty of inspiration online about different ways you can make your teddy bear parachutes. Have fun!
If entrants would like to offer a donation to help restore the church font, there will be opportunity to do this on the day.
A demonstration of bell-ringing at 10:30am, and Mulbarton's community choir at 3pm.
Not only can you come and enjoy these cracking performances, but there will also be an opportunity to have-a-go at some things. If you play keyboard, the organ will be open to you to have a play on, in between other things that are happening. From 12:30pm, you will be able to have a go at simple chiming or proper ringing with our church bells. Definitely an experience. If hand bells are more your thing, we'll also have a full set of those on display, with opportunity to get hands-on.
You'll also encounter some fabulous floral displays in the church.
If you'd like to find out more about getting involved with the choir or with the flower-arranging, people will be on hand to talk with you.
Mulbarton Church is home to many beautiful and ancient pieces of history. One piece in particular is in urgent need of repair, and without attention very soon, will be lost to us forever. Our medieval font has stood in Mulbarton church for many centuries, and seen many hundreds of parishioners go through its waters over the years.
Certainly there will be a lot of families in Mulbarton today who will have fond memories of their loved ones being baptised in this font. Various bodged repairs over the centuries have ended up causing more damage, and it is has almost reached the point of becoming irreparable, and presents something of a safety hazard.
The professional advice is that as it stands it is possible to make a good repair, which would give the font a lease of life for many more centuries. In order to preserve this precious piece of heritage for future generations, it is worthwhile doing that work - but it must be done soon.
We are appealing to the people of Mulbarton, to whom this heritage belongs, to help fund this urgent work. £10,000 might seem like a lot of money, but for a thousand years of service, that's only £10 per year, and perhaps only £1 per baptism. Don't let us be the generation that allows this precious resource to crumble.
Gift Aid forms will be available from the giving desk on Saturday, and we do hope parishioners will dig deep to get behind this project.
If you'd prefer to give to the wider work of the church, there will be opportunity to do that as well, either as a one-off or on an on-going basis.

There will be a prize raffle too. All proceeds to the Sierra Leone ‘Street Child’ charity. From 25th-30th May Helen will be travelling out to Sierra Leone to work alongside the charity ‘Street Child’ (Registered Charity No: 1128536), established in 2008, that aims to create educational opportunity for some of the world's most vulnerable and poorest children in West Africa and Nepal. The charity works directly with street children in their own environment towards reunification with their families, reintroduction to education and the creation of a sustainable home-life for their ongoing upbringing. Whilst out in Sierra Leone, on the 28th May 2017, she will be taking part in the Sierra Leone Marathon which is the charity’s biggest annual fundraiser. Money raised at the Coffee & Cake morning will contribute towards this. Helen is offering her skills (and time) as an A&E sister volunteering for this project, but need to fundraise to cover costs in order to help the charity provide basic amenities such as toilets and clean drinking water for the schools. She is hoping to raise a total sum of £1500 for this event. (Harvest House is situated 2 houses down from the church towards the Village Hall)
In our final Wednesday evening Lent session, we will be looking back to Welcome Course which we worked through last year. This final session will be an opportunity to celebrate all the positive outcomes from that, as we look to the future.

Instead of meeting together at Hethel this month, those of us who are going to be around and free in the afternoon are going instead to attend the Mothering Sunday service in Norwich Cathedral which runs from 3.30 pm - 4.30 pm. The Cathedral publicity describes this as "an informal, family-friendly service for Mothering Sunday which will include the distribution of posies".
Do come and join in with this if you are free. I can co-ordinate lifts for those who wish to share transport (let me know). Or anyone who would like to meet up there, let's meet outside the West Front door of the Cathedral at 3.20 pm on Sunday afternoon. Parking should be available in the Cathedral Close.
A historical note on Mothering Sunday:
Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter. During the sixteenth century, people returned to their 'mother church', the main church or cathedral of the area, for a service. This was either the church where you were baptised, or the local parish church or more often the nearest cathedral. Anyone who did this was commonly said to have gone "a-mothering". Mothering Sunday became a day when domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mother church, usually with their own mothers and other family members. Children would pick flowers to place in the church or to give to their mothers.

We’re joining in with the national Fairtrade Fortnight this Saturday. Join us for Fairtrade refreshments, sale of Fairtrade goods, and good company, as we help drive much needed change for farmers in developing countries.
Having the perfect cuppa or a snack is an important part of our daily routine, yet millions of farmers who produce the treats we enjoy during our breaks are struggling to make a living. However hard they work to provide the products we depend on, they still aren’t paid what they deserve.
In Kenya’s coffee and tea-growing regions one in three people live in poverty, while tea pickers in Malawi earn less than £1.46 a day. This is not enough to provide decent food, education or healthcare for their families or invest in better farming.
The food on our tables, the tea and coffee in our mugs, all come from farmers who work hard but are not paid what they deserve.
Whether in the UK or in Malawi, no one deserves to be short-changed for a hard day’s work. When we reach for the cheapest products, we may be unconsciously feeding exploitation. We become part of the problem, but we can make a conscious choice to be part of the solution and support trade that is fair.
We’re grateful to Rachel’s advocacy and many of us who have supported the Fairtrade movement for some years in our villages, as we’ve learnt what difference it makes around the world. Yet, not enough people are buying it and not enough farmers are benefiting from it. We hope and pray this year for more people to get behind farmers and their families this Fairtrade Fortnight and beyond.
Choose Fairtrade when you next shop, or ask your local store to stock Fairtrade products. Join our Fairtrade "Big Brew" – because farmers deserve sustainable incomes.

All parishioners are welcome to attend our annual meeting, where we hear reports from the chairman and treasurer, and appoint committee members and officers. We'll also be considering the merging of the Flordon Community Group with the Flordon Community Trust.
All are welcome to join us to celebrate the start of 12 days of Christmas. Our short service of communion will last about 45 minutes, and is the ideal way to enter into the true meaning of behind the season.

We will sing familiar carols and use simple contemporary liturgy. Visitors are welcome to partake of the bread and wine or simply visit the communion rail for a blessing.
This half-hour service is especially suited to 4-7-year-olds, although all ages are welcome to come and enjoy the atmospheric and interactive re-telling of the nativity story, as the sun goes down on Christmas Eve - and you may even find a treat for your little one!
Come along to our special candle-lit service. A special six piece brass ensemble will lead us as we sing our favourite Christmas carols, and listen to the ancient words about the Nativity of our Lord being read.
Mulled wine and mince pies will be available after the service, which will last about an hour.

Over the next few years as Oakley Park, the new Hopkins’ estate, develops, the Church plans to host a series of Welcome afternoons twice a year, in autumn and spring. We have had quite a good take up so far from village organisations and groups planning to get involved by sending representatives and/or information.

We as a Church have registered to take part in this initiative. The Welcome to its website states ‘ A weekend to initiate a wave of prayer over our nation, one life, one street, one community at a time. We believe that local people praying for their community can transform the nation. Central to National Prayer Weekend 2016 is the heart to see people in our local communities know and encounter God as their Father through the power of prayer.’ It is hoped to hold a prayer meeting in each of the Churches in the benefice over the weekend. As we await the return of Christ, the first and foremost thing that our Lord Jesus has left us to do is to let everybody know about what God has done for them through the coming, the death, the resurrection and the ascension of Jesus Christ.
Our news is good. Our news is urgent.
Swapan Biswas has spent most of his life introducing others to the Lord Jesus, and all that God has done for them, as he's travelled the foothills of the Himalayas. His father before him, BK Biswas, started evangelising and planting churches in the 1950s, and has an inspiring testimony to the grace of God. They have seen strong and steady growth every year. "Reaching the unreached" has been the consistent vision over the decades. Swapan reports:
"This year we praised God to see many who accepted Christ and 148 people who took their next step in baptism. We celebrate in mentioning the numbers since we strongly believe every number has a name and a story behind, which matters to God. We want to see the gospel move in North Bengal, Sikkim and Bhutan. Jesus is using every individual in our movement to reach out and I strongly believe that the best is yet to come."
Faithfully evangelising, baptising, engaging youth and children, advocating for displaced communities, assisting with social work and encouraging self-supporting business, reaching, raising and releasing leaders and pastors - it's all part of the life flow of the Masihi Mandli churches, reaching the unreached.
Now Swapan is touring the UK, bringing a much needed message to our churches, inspiring us to recapture the heart of mission, reaching our own unreached.
God is longing for the good news to go to the nations. Yet, for us, sharing our faith can sometimes feel awkward or difficult. Swapan comes from a place of tremendous experience, and offers real helpful inspiration about how to be faithful to God over the long haul in our own context. This is something we need.
Come along on Saturday morning, 17th September, to the House of Prayer in Norwich. Come to meet with the living God. Come to hear the stories of God at work in that north-east corner of India. Come to hear the message that God is bringing to us to recapture the heart of mission. Come to receive a fresh anointing as Swapan prays for us to be released in new ways and to receive more of the Holy Spirit's power to be witnesses, according to Christ's command.
This is not another seminar on evangelism, or church-planting. This is simply an opportunity, for us in Norfolk, to receive something of God into our hearts that could result in an unstoppable and unforced outflow of the mission of God into God's world.

What was it like here 100 years ago? 500 years ago? 1000 years ago? Was the church spun out of Wymondham Abbey in the early 1100s? How old is the Thorn? Is the mound near the Thorn a tumulus? Was the original village of Hethel in the field to the east of the Church? What did the farmland look like before the airfield was built in 1943? And after?
Last summer, a group of final year UEA history students surveyed and researched the landscape of Hethel. And wrote dissertations. On September 10 and 11 (10am to 5pm) there will be an exhibition of their work in Hethel Church, which looks at some of the questions above. Some of the now-graduates will be around to discuss their findings with you, and, if you like, take you on a guided tour of the ground. Timings on our website www.acny.org.uk/hethel. Drinks, cake and light lunches will be on sale (but the rest is free!). 389 Bomb Group Memorial Exhibition is also open for HODs – about 10 minutes walk from the church. You can see maps of the airfield as it was, numerous artefacts, and the amazing mural of Christ on the cross.
Thousands of individuals, families and groups of all ages, will take part in the annual "bike ride" on Saturday 10 Sept 2016, 9am to 5pm, and will be planning their routes and signing up sponsors from now until bike ride day. Sponsor forms will be available in the churches, and by down loading from Norfolk Churches Trust website. Riders and walkers choose which local church will receive half of their sponsor money. The remainder goes to Norfolk Churches Trust to be given out as grants for essential repairs to our historic churches in need of repair. The Bike Ride has raised around £2,800,000 over the past 32 years. Sponsorship forms for Mulbarton Church are also available from Tony James Tony has kindly agreed to co-ordinate the effort with staffing Mulbarton Church for this event. We really need people to offer to be in the Church, or Harvest House, to sign the cyclists' sheets and offer hospitality (refreshments will be made available). Please let Tony, Jill Wright or Caroline know if you are able to spare an hour (or two!) on that Saturday to help. It would be great if several people could do a stint - last time Tony did it on his own!

In June 2015 a group of third-year students from the UEA surveyed the landscape of Hethel, especially the area around All Saints Church, the Hethel Thorn, Moat House and the remains of the eastern end of the airfield. This work fed into a range of research projects covering topics from the medieval period to the 20 th century.
Some of the students, now graduates, and lecturer Dr Jon Gregory will share their conclusions at this and a follow-up event at the church.
Reading a Landscape: Fieldwork & Landscape History in Hethel
UEA’s Dr Jon Gregory will explain the various techniques used by landscape historians, the work carried out here last summer and the conclusions (and further questions!) arising from the research projects. Jon will illustrate his talk, and take questions after a decent pause for wine and nibbles.

Christians Together in Mulbarton and surrounding villages will be praying for a full week, starting with a short service in Mulbarton Church and fnishing one week later with a short service in Flordon Church.
Individuals, pairs or groups can sign up for one-hour slots online or by phoning the Rectory office.
Bishop Alan is joining us in Harvest House at 10am on Saturday 18th June, ahead of vote day on 23rd June. This will be an occasion to bring all of our ponderings to date, and think together about how we process all of that in a Christian way, in order to help us come to our final decision, whether we vote in or out.
There will be some reflections on how we approach the issue as well as space to bring our own questions and thoughts.
We won't be looking to come to conclusions about how to vote, nor are we offering loads of political expertise. Rather we're offering a theological and biblical sounding board, so that we might seek together for insight into how to sift the assertions that are coming to us and how to think Christianly about this important vote.
In the meantime, the diocese have gathered a selection of resources to help us think Christianly about this important moment in UK history.
St. Valentine’s Day this year falls on a Sunday, so we have a superb opportunity to gather couples who live locally or who have married in one of our churches, along with family and friends, to celebrate the gift of marriage. It's a way of saying that the church cares even beyond the wedding day, and we’re always here for people. And what more romantic way could there be to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a renewal of wedding vows back in the place where you were wed or in a local village church? However many couples are able to come along will all have the opportunity to renew vows all at the same time. If you know someone you think would like a personal invite, please contact me and I’ll arrange it.
The ceremony itself will be a brief but meaningful occasion. The church bells will ring out before and after, and afterwards we will serve champagne and fruitcake. Folk would be welcome to stay for as long as they like to enjoy the romantic ambience of our beautiful ancient church building, specially decorated for the occasion. Of course, children would be more than welcome. There is no need to book ahead. We would be delighted to see a good crowd. Also, you needn’t be married to come along, even though that’s where the focus will be. This will be an act of worship and anyone is most welcome. If you’d like to let us know you’ll be coming along, however, it would help with planning the refreshments, and you can get in touch with me. There is no charge for this event.

This free evening event, hosted by the Diocese of Norwich for its clergy and people, will have four speakers leading a discussion on whether we can find ways to disagree well over issues of human sexuality.
In response to the Pilling Report a process of shared conversations is underway across the Church of England. The focus is on the church’s mission in the light of immense cultural change around the issue of human sexuality. The church’s calling is to present the gospel afresh in each generation, and a changing social context will always raise new questions. The task is to be clear about how to be an effective missionary church in a changing culture around human sexuality.
There appears to be no realistic expectation of achieving consensus on these matters in the foreseeable future, and so the Archbishop of Canterbury has stressed the importance of working at reaching ‘good disagreement’. For this to happen, we will need to learn to listen charitably and respectfully to those with whom we disagree. We will need to try to find something of Christ in one another in spite of our disagreements. We will need to find models in the Scriptures and in our tradition that help us to see how Christians can disagree well enabling us to be effective in mission.
One of the key questions proposed in the Pilling Report (by the Revd. Professor Oliver O’Donovan) is whether some form of pastoral accommodation is an option to which we can subscribe? We wish, therefore, to address the question of what is required of Christians on all sides of the debate about human sexuality if we are to model good disagreement.

Children's entertainer and worship leader Doug Horley is back in Norfolk for one night in November with a Crazy Science Praise Party.
Hosted by Carleton Rode Baptist Church on Friday November 13 from 6.30 to 8.00pm, this will be a great family/praise/fun/evangelistic event including wacky science demos, puppets, lively action songs.

Two of the area’s best-known entertainers again join forces. Well known writer, broadcaster and mardler Keith Skipper shares the platform with Ian Prettyman, a former teacher, still busy as local Methodist preacher, and popular purveyor of traditional East Anglian songs. Keith will do most of the talking, sharing favourite yarns from Church and Chapel as well as a bible reading in his beloved Norfolk dialect. On Sundays 23th and 30th August, 6th and 20th September (if necessary) at 2 pm. We will be mowing Hethel Churchyard as part of its management as a Conservation churchyard. Tools provided (bring your own if you wish) and also great refreshments. All welcome to any of the Sunday afternoons for as long as you can stay. Dr Anne Edwards who heads up the mowing team has written : "Hethel churchyard is a remnant of the ancient meadows, flower-rich grasslands, which were once widespread in the countryside but are now disappearing at an alarming rate. It has been estimated that since 1945 Norfolk has lost 98% of its meadows to development, overgrazing, ploughing or by herbicide and fertiliser usage. Since the early 1990s this churchyard has been managed by volunteers from the Wymondham Nature Group (WyNG) and from the PCC via the Norfolk Wildlife Trust conservation scheme. The churchyard is mown only once ayear, at the end of the summer, in the manner of a traditional hay meadow. The cut vegetation is raked and taken away to ensure that the fertility of the ground is kept low. If the grass was mown regularly then delicate wildflowers could not survive and any increase in fertility would mean they could not compete with more vigorous plants like nettles. The undisturbed nature of the churchyard makes it a quiet refuge for all sorts of wildlife and there is a magnificent floral display throughout the year." Come and join us if you can! Care of Creation; Care of Neighbour – Hethel Church’s ‘flagship’ event for 2015 takes place over the weekend 11-13 September. The programme of nine ‘TED Talks’ on the Saturday is taking shape, from John Moore on national energy regulations and the possibility of community ‘grids’ to Alex Bilham giving the onceover on a Nissan electric car, and from Ruth Valerio on community pig farms to me on travelling to Prague, Madrid, Rome and Corsica by rail. Oh, and Paul Woodmin on Electric Highways plus Master Composters on, er, how to compost. Ruth will kick us off on the Friday evening with a discussion on Why we should care for God’s Earth (Hethel Church, 7.30pm). I expect it will be mainly followers of Jesus who come to that; please put it in your diary. There was a great turn-out at the recent midweek talk in Mulbarton Church on creation; this topic is just as important!
We have a great team (Irene Woodward, Janet Negal, Diane Robinson and Dr Anne Edwards BEM) working on a biodiversity ‘thread’, with exhibits and lots of activities for children and adults in the churchyard. And Hethel Church’s new kitchen unit will be invaluable for providing food and drinks all day both days – low carbon impact, of course.

Stephen Church is Professor of Medieval History at UEA. He has been on TV and other media a lot recently because he's an expert and a lively writer and presenter on King John and Magna Carta.
Hethel and its Old Thorn (NWT reserve) has long had rumoured associations with King John – Kelly's Directory of 1883 notes that the thorn "dates as far back as the time of King John, 1214", for example. It's interesting that the renewed Mulbarton Village website claims a bit of King John, too! "Mulbarton is believed to be one of the possible locations for King John's lost caravan of gold in 1215" says one of the scrolling pictures at www.mulbarton.info.
On Saturday evening, 1st August at 7.30pm at Hethel church, Prof Stephen will give an illustrated talk confirming (or debunking) the stories and sharing something of what life must have been like in the Norfolk countryside in the 13th century, when Norwich was England's second city. Before questions, appropriate refreshments (spiced wine; sweet beer; cider...) will be served in an interval. Suggested donation £6.50.

We welcome Dominic Statham, from Creation Ministries International, to Mulbarton Church. Dominic will give an interesting presentation that engages with the issues around origins and how we talk about this in today's world. There will be opportunities to ask questions. Just bring an inquisitive and open mind!
Dominic became a Christian as a student in the early eighties. Over the following years, he became convinced of the need to hold firmly to the Bible as the basis for Christian belief and practice. Intrigued by the endless media assertions that “evolution is a fact” and that “the Bible is wrong”, he decided to investigate the scientific issues for himself. He was astonished by the weakness of the arguments presented by evolutionists, and is now keen to help others realise that there is no conflict between science and Christianity, and that the Bible can be trusted from the very first verse.
Dominic has a particular interest in Christian ethics, and his conviction that the Bible is true stems, in part, from his growing appreciation of the wisdom contained in both the Old and New Testaments. These, he has come to realise, perfectly portray the nature of man—his spiritual and moral needs—and provide an understanding of godliness and rightful living that can be found nowhere else. He is convinced that no book is more needed or more relevant in our current age than the Bible.
Dominic is a Chartered Engineer and graduate of Loughborough University in the UK. He has extensive experience of both manufacturing and product development and holds a number of patents. As an employee of Rolls Royce, he worked on projects for the Panavia Tornado and Eurofighter Typhoon and, as an employee of GKN, engineering drivelines for Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. He is a speaker and writer for CMI-UK/Europe and the author of Evolution: Good Science? Exposing the ideological nature of Darwin’s theory.
A group of us from the benefice will be attending this afternoon session in Norwich to explore what the FiC course might be able to offer us as we seek to go deeper in following Christ here in this group of churches.

Contemporary charismatic worship, with an inspiring talk from Medad, author of "Tombstones and Banana Trees", and founder of World Shine Ministries, which supports some of the poorest in Uganda and has seen hundreds of thousands saved, healed and delivered through their inter-denominational evangelistic campaigns. There will be an opportunity to receive prayer for healing or anything else. The evening is open to anyone.
This year, Medad joined David Cameron and others form the UK government and UNICEF at the Girl Summit, and spoke on the role of education in ending gender-based violence and forced marriage. He has also been connecting an emerging network of new houses of prayer across several countries, and seen the work of World Shine Ministries grow in Uganda.
Following the 2013 Norwich Diocesan Lent Project, that raised funds for the World Shine School, Medad has been able to provide boarding facilities for over 100 children (out of about 700) at the school, which has been a great success. We are exploring the possibility of extending the education provision to include secondary this year.
