Wed, 9 Oct, 2024, 7pm @ St Michael's Community Centre, Flordon
Flordon Film Club will be screening TEACHER's LOUNGE in St. Michael's Community Centre Wednesday 10th October. The doors open at 7.00pm and the film starts at 7.45.
Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) is a new arrival on the staff of a middle school in Germany, her commitment and optimism still unblunted. When the suspicion for a spate of thefts falls on a particular boy, based on little more than his skin colour, she acts to exonerate him, capturing, through dubious means, evidence that seems to implicate a fellow member of staff. But the accused teacher, single mother of Oskar (Leo Stettnisch), another child in Carla’s class, doggedly protests her innocence.
“A gripping poignant drama fronted by a staggeringly good performance from Benesch.” The Upcoming “A fine exercise in restrained but mounting tension.” Variety “Benesch is superb.” The Guardian Watch the trailer at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbUaACY8wRQ
Tickets are £5 each at the door. Annual membership is now also due at £10. To book or for more information about the club please contact David Harrison on 470118 or david020747@hotmail.co.uk
The next meeting after this will be on Wednesday 11 December. The film has yet to be chosen.
Tue, 28 May, 2024, 7:30pm - 9:30pm @ Harvest House
At Flordon Church's Annual Parochial Church Meeting, all members of the Electoral Roll are welcome.
We would love to see you in Flordon Church to celebrate all that we were able to accomplish last year, and all that we look forward to doing together this year, in the service of Christ and in the service of our communities. It is an occasion to celebrate, to receive fresh vision, and to elect representatives who can continue to carry the vision forward.
It is also a time for any church members, electoral roll members or regular worshipers, to raise any issues that they wish the church council to address. The floor will be open.
We do hope to see you there.
Various reports are presented at the meeting, which give different perspectives on what was happening in 2023. These are linked here (as they become available), so you can read ahead of time and bring any questions or thoughts you might have. We would love to hear from you.
Wed, 20 Dec, 2023, 7pm @ St Michael's Community Centre, Flordon
Flordon Film Club will be screening THE OLD OAK in St. Michael's Community Centre Wednesday 20th December, with free mulled wine and mince pies! The doors open at 7.00pm and the film starts at 7.45.
This is Ken Loach’s latest film (and some would say one of his best), which has the contemporary theme of refugees. “A lot could be said about The Old Oak’s beautiful cinematography, excellent acting, and marvellous directing, all of which make this story come to life, but what really stands out the most in the film is the humanity that shines throughout. It is a beautiful reminder of what a community is and can be, regardless of country of origin, religion, or skin colour.”(Loud and Clear Reviews)
Tickets are £5 each, and annual membership which is now due also is £5. To book or for more information about the club please contact David on 470118 or david020747@hotmail.co.uk
Please note: In 2024 meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of the month, and so the following meeting will be on Wednesday 14 February. The film has yet to be chosen.

The Trams of Norwich: Transforming Streets, Transforming Lives

We welcome Frances and Michael Holmes back to Flordon to give us another of their interesting and entertaining talks:

In 1900 trams arrived on Norwich’s streets. They were greeted with awe as a technological wonder that not only revolutionised travel but also radically changed the City.Using a combination of images, archive material and contemporary accounts Frances & Michael Holmes will illustrate that the story of the trams is about so much more than a vehicle – It is the story of how that vehicle transformed our city.

FISHERMAN'S FRIEND (2019) Drama 12A 112 minutes
Directed by Chris Foggin. With Daniel Mays, Tuppence Middleton
Ten fishermen from Cornwall achieve a Top 10 hit after they are signed by Universal Records for their canny talent of being able to sing a sea shanty or two. Whilst there is definite appeal to coastal venues with strong fishing links, Fisherman’s Friends taps into the sense of close-knit communities, middle-age male obsolescence and the commitment of keeping traditions alive.
One to keep audiences swinging and swaying along in the aisles.

Joan Stanley is a widow living out a quiet retirement in the suburbs when, shockingly, the British Secret Service places her under arrest. The charge: providing classified scientific information - including details on the building of the atomic bomb - to the Soviet government for decades. As the interrogation gets underway, Joan relives the dramatic events that shaped her life and her beliefs.

Not to be confused with last season’s The Hatton Garden Job, but covering the same ground, King of Thieves is the incredible true story of the spectacular Hatton Garden diamond heist, the biggest and most daring in British history, humorously told through career best performances from a stellar cast which includes Sir Michael Caine, Jim Broadbent, Ray Winstone, Michael Gambon, Tom Courtenay and Charlie Cox.
“Michael Caine gives one of his best performances in years as the pensive, recently widowed mastermind Brian Reader, resolutely adhering to the notion of honour among thieves, while Paul Whitehouse and Michael Gambon provide perfectly judged comic relief. But most striking of all is Jim Broadbent, whose cuddly, avuncular exterior gives way to a figure of genuine menace.” - Radio Times

Mike Leigh’s portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre. Government forces charged into a crowd of over 60,000 people who had gathered in a peaceful protest against rising levels of poverty and to demand political reform. Many protesters were killed and hundreds more injured, sparking a nationwide outcry but also further government suppression. The Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy which also played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper. Starring Maxine Peake and Rory Kinnear.
“Leigh’s achievement is to have made a period film with the same immediacy and sense of anger that runs through contemporary dramas like Hillsborough or Bloody Sunday. He has a huge ensemble cast but that exhaustive attention to detail and fascination with the eccentricities of human behaviour which has always characterised his work is still there.” The Independent

THE BOOKSHOP (2017) Drama PG 113 minutes
It is 1959, and widowed Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to open up a bookshop in the sleepy seaside town of Hardborough. When she exposes the narrow minded townsfolk to the best literature of the day including Nabokov's scandalizing "Lolita" and Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451", she gains a kindred spirit and ally in the figure of Mr Brundish (Bill Nighy), who is himself sick of the town's stale atmosphere, but has to reckon with the hostility of the other shopkeepers and of self-appointed doyenne Mrs Gamart (Patricia Clarkson).
Please come early for mulled wine, sausage rolls and minced pies!
New members are always welcome. Subscriptions for 2019 are now due please.
Tickets are now on sale. Just £5. Book now and pay on the door.
BREATHE 115 mins 12A Drama/Biography/Romance This month we are showing BREATHE. When Robin (Andrew Garfield) is struck down by polio at the age of 28, he is confined to a hospital bed and given only a few months to live. With the help of his wife's twin brothers (Tom Hollander) and the ground-breaking ideas of inventor Teddy Hall (Hugh Bonneville), Robin and Diana (Claire Foy) dare to escape the hospital ward to seek out a full and passionate life together - raising their young son, traveling and devoting their lives to helping other polio patients.
“Part exuberant love story, part great escape adventure, this is an old-fashioned tale of triumph over adversity that refuses – like its protagonists – to succumb to confinement. I honestly can’t remember the last time I laughed and cried so much at the same movie.” Mark Kermode

NORWICH 1945 to 1960: A Journey from Austerity to Prosperity
7 years ago
Fri, 9 Mar, 2018, 7:30pm @ Flordon Church
Last year we enjoyed a talk by Frances and Michael Holmes on Norwich Market, this year they are coming back to talk to us about Norwich 1945 – 1960 A Journey from Austerity to Posterity, which is the title of their latest book. They are very entertaining speakers and much in demand so we are fortunate to have them back with us in March.
A talk by FRANCES and MICHAEL HOLMES
illustrated by pictures and sounds from that era
Join them for a trip down memory lane . They will bring back a time
when after years of war the City was rebuilt and regenerated; when
City workers made shoes and chocolate; when Teddy boys added colour
to the City and youngsters danced the night away at the Samson &
Hercules. A trip which will take you from the rationing of the post-war
years to a time when we ‘never had it so good’
All proceeds to Flordon Church
Suggested donation £6 includes a glass of wine/juice & nibbles
STOP PRESS: Please note change of film for this month. 'Breathe' will be shown in April instead.
Doors Open 7pm. Film starts approx. 7.45pm.

MY COUSIN RACHEL 106 mins 12A Drama/Mystery/Romance From the 1951 novel by Daphne du Maurier. A young Englishman (Sam Claflin – Their Finest) plots revenge against his late cousin's mysterious, beautiful widow (Rachel Weisz), believing her responsible for his death. But his feelings become complicated as he finds himself falling under the beguiling spell of her charms.
This one should do very well for us – Gothic melodrama and wonderful Cornish scenery.
“My Cousin Rachel is a highly enjoyable mystery thriller of the sort that modern communication and the internet have made impossible to set in the present day. Adapted and directed by Roger Michell, it is a fantastically preposterous psychological drama featuring a lush score from Rael Jones and a tremendous lead performance from Rachel Weisz – who is mean, minxy and manipulative. Her sheer charisma persuades you to overlook one or two plot glitches. I can only describe this film as the roistering missing link between The Talented Mr Ripley and Far from the Madding Crowd.” Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian

This is the first film of the new season so that also means…membership subscriptions are due…still just £5 per person for the year.
VICTORIA AND ABDUL 110 mins PG Biography/Drama/History “There’s both pointed mischief and genuine emotion in abundance as this fascinating true story emerges from the shadows of history. To portray Queen Victoria as a pioneering multiculturalist perhaps errs on the side of generosity, yet it’s surprising how much still rings true in this fable about Britain’s intoxication with the idea of India… as long as the more troubling reality remains safely at arm’s length.” Radio Times

With increasing costs, we are currently exploring the idea of setting up a ‘Friends of Flordon Church’ group to ensure that St Michael's can continue to serve the current wider community and future generations. If you are interested in offering support to a Friends group, or if you would like to feed in your thoughts and ideas before we make decisions, we would love to meet you this evening at St Michael’s Church for an introductory meeting to explore our options.
A man is shipwrecked on a deserted island and encounters a red turtle, which changes his life.
"The course of 80 minutes brings us nail-biting drama, a touch of romance (!) and a profound engagement with the cycle of life, all rendered in an exquisite line-drawing style that's elemental in its simplicity. If all that makes it essentially art house animation, then so be it, but this beautiful, handcrafted movie is a one-of-a-kind viewing experience that will linger long in the imagination." Radio Times.
Doors open 7pm. Please come along and have a glass of mulled wine, sausage rolls and a mince pie!

Putting man on the moon is one of humanity’s greatest achievements, but the women who played a part in getting him there have gone unsung for too long – and the fact that some of them were African-American is the surprise draw of this inspiring, Oscar-nominated account, which stars Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae and Kevin Costner.
HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)—brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

What was it like here 100 years ago? 500 years ago? 1000 years ago? Was the church spun out of Wymondham Abbey in the early 1100s? How old is the Thorn? Is the mound near the Thorn a tumulus? Was the original village of Hethel in the field to the east of the Church? What did the farmland look like before the airfield was built in 1943? And after?
Last summer, a group of final year UEA history students surveyed and researched the landscape of Hethel. And wrote dissertations. On September 10 and 11 (10am to 5pm) there will be an exhibition of their work in Hethel Church, which looks at some of the questions above. Some of the now-graduates will be around to discuss their findings with you, and, if you like, take you on a guided tour of the ground. Timings on our website www.acny.org.uk/hethel. Drinks, cake and light lunches will be on sale (but the rest is free!). 389 Bomb Group Memorial Exhibition is also open for HODs – about 10 minutes walk from the church. You can see maps of the airfield as it was, numerous artefacts, and the amazing mural of Christ on the cross.
Twenty beautiful floral arrangements representing the ‘Circle of Life’, from cradle to grave.
Open 10.30am – 5.00pm daily in the church.
Refreshments available in Helen and Jimmy’s garden next to the church until 4pm. Ploughman’s Lunches and delicious teas with homemade cakes served on Saturday and Sunday, teas and cakes only, on Monday.
Plant stall, Bric-a-brac etc. in marquee on the green.
Two of the area’s best-known entertainers again join forces. Well known writer, broadcaster and mardler Keith Skipper shares the platform with Ian Prettyman, a former teacher, still busy as local Methodist preacher, and popular purveyor of traditional East Anglian songs. Keith will do most of the talking, sharing favourite yarns from Church and Chapel as well as a bible reading in his beloved Norfolk dialect. Ian will provide musical items - including a rousing medley on his trusty melodeon. Book with Janet 471070 Suggested donation £9.50 Refreshments Raffle
