Mothering Sunday Communion
Each year on the fourth Sunday of Lent, countries around the world celebrate Mothering Sunday. This typically involves lavishing Mums with gifts and attention and celebrating the women who have nurtured us throughout our lives. But with the day becoming increasingly commercialised, how many people are aware of its very different origins? Here are some of the traditions that have shaped Mothering Sunday into the celebration recognised today:
The Journey to the Mother Church
In the 16th century, Mothering Sunday was less about mothers and more about church. Back then, people would make a journey to their ‘mother’ church once a year. This might have been their home church, their nearest cathedral or a major parish church in a bigger town. The service which took place at the ‘mother’ church symbolised the coming together of families. This would have represented a significant journey for many.
A day off to visit Mother
Another tradition was to allow those working in the fields on wealthy farms and estates in England to have the day off on the fourth Sunday of Lent to visit their mothers and possibly go to church too. This was a variation on the theme of visiting the 'mother' church and was a move towards a more family focussed occasion. Before the days of cars and roads, family get-togethers were far more rare. In some ways this tradition is still alive today as grown up children often visit their parents on mothering Sunday.
Traditions today
This Sunday, churches around the country will be sharing their own traditions, celebrating and giving thanks to the huge impact mothers have on each of our lives. The church recognises that the day may be difficult for some people and so it is common place for services to include prayers for those who don’t find the day particularly easy.

Wild Church - All Age Worship
Wild Church - a bit less churchy and a bit more outdoorsy. An open, relaxed, outside time (though the church building is available for those who'd prefer to be inside) to connect with God through nature. This Sunday we will be meeting in the churchyard in Mulbarton, to consider the theme of CHANGE. What does nature teach us about this subject and how can we respond to the changes we face? We gather at 10.00am and aim to be finished by 11.00am. Everyone is invited to join us. Refreshments available throughout the hour. If you have a long handled tong such as used on a barbecue please bring it along to help facilitate our fire pit activity!

Ash Wednesday Service
Ash Wednesday marks the start of the observation of Lent, a season of self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study, and preparation for Easter. Lent is often described as lasting forty days (excluding Sundays) which recalls the Biblical account of Jesus’s temptation in the wilderness (Luke 4.1-13). Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence. From the Middle Ages onward it has been a custom to begin Lent by having the sign of the cross marked on one’s forehead in ash. The Liturgical Year | The Church of England

Flordon Film Club will be screening Swede Caroline (15) in St. Michael's Community Centre Wednesday 11th December. The doors open at 7.00pm and the film starts at 7.45.
An hilarious mockumentary which follows Caroline, a competitive giant vegetable grower, as she readies herself for the big annual National Veg Championship. When her prized marrow, named Ricky Hutton, is stolen, Caroline and her fellow growers, conspiracy theorist Paul (Richard Lumsden) and affable Willy (Celyn Jones), are led into a seedy world of crime as they attempt to find the culprit.
“Sitting somewhere between Hot Fuzz and Sightseers in terms of its tone, Swede Caroline is a ridiculously fun romp from the outset. Complete with a highly stylised and dramatic opening title sequence, which parodies those of Netflix true crime documentaries, the filmmakers nail the balance between mundanity and absurdity. This makes for many genuinely funny moments throughout the film, with one of the best seeing mayhem erupt after the trio attempt to stealthily observe an allotment.” The Upcoming
“The film is gloriously silly, with the three reliably retaining their composure as they uncover the truth behind Caroline’s tragic vegetable loss.” Independent.co.uk

Flordon Film Club will be screening TEACHER's LOUNGE in St. Michael's Community Centre Wednesday 10th October. The doors open at 7.00pm and the film starts at 7.45.
Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) is a new arrival on the staff of a middle school in Germany, her commitment and optimism still unblunted. When the suspicion for a spate of thefts falls on a particular boy, based on little more than his skin colour, she acts to exonerate him, capturing, through dubious means, evidence that seems to implicate a fellow member of staff. But the accused teacher, single mother of Oskar (Leo Stettnisch), another child in Carla’s class, doggedly protests her innocence.
“A gripping poignant drama fronted by a staggeringly good performance from Benesch.” The Upcoming
“A fine exercise in restrained but mounting tension.” Variety
“Benesch is superb.” The Guardian

Flordon Film Club
Flordon Film Club will be screening THE OLD OAK in St. Michael's Community Centre Wednesday 20th December, with free mulled wine and mince pies! The doors open at 7.00pm and the film starts at 7.45.
This is Ken Loach’s latest film (and some would say one of his best), which has the contemporary theme of refugees. “A lot could be said about The Old Oak’s beautiful cinematography, excellent acting, and marvellous directing, all of which make this story come to life, but what really stands out the most in the film is the humanity that shines throughout. It is a beautiful reminder of what a community is and can be, regardless of country of origin, religion, or skin colour.” (Loud and Clear Reviews)
Tickets are £5 each, and annual membership which is now due also is £5. To book or for more information about the club please contact David on 470118 or david020747@hotmail.co.uk
Please note: In 2024 meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of the month, and so the following meeting will be on Wednesday 14 February. The film has yet to be chosen.

The Trams of Norwich: Transforming Streets, Transforming Lives
4 years ago
We welcome Frances and Michael Holmes back to Flordon to give us another of their interesting and entertaining talks:
Admission: suggested donation of £5 includes a glass of wine and nibbles. Please book with Janet.
In 1900 trams arrived on Norwich’s streets. They were greeted with awe as a technological wonder that not only revolutionised travel but also radically changed the City. Using a combination of images, archive material and contemporary accounts Frances & Michael Holmes will illustrate that the story of the trams is about so much more than a vehicle – It is the story of how that vehicle transformed our city.

The Red Turtle
Tickets Just £5.
We are showing the ’The Red Turtle’. 80mins PG
A man is shipwrecked on a deserted island and encounters a red turtle, which changes his life.
"The course of 80 minutes brings us nail-biting drama, a touch of romance (!) and a profound engagement with the cycle of life, all rendered in an exquisite line-drawing style that's elemental in its simplicity. If all that makes it essentially art house animation, then so be it, but this beautiful, handcrafted movie is a one-of-a-kind viewing experience that will linger long in the imagination." Radio Times.
Doors open 7pm. Please come along and have a glass of mulled wine, sausage rolls and a mince pie!
7.45pm film starts.

The charity works directly with street children in their own environment towards reunification with their families, reintroduction to education and the creation of a sustainable home-life for their ongoing upbringing. Whilst out in Sierra Leone, on the 28th May 2017, she will be taking part in the Sierra Leone Marathon which is the charity’s biggest annual fundraiser. Money raised at the Coffee & Cake morning will contribute towards this. Helen is offering her skills (and time) as an A&E sister volunteering for this project, but need to fundraise to cover costs in order to help the charity provide basic amenities such as toilets and clean drinking water for the schools. She is hoping to raise a total sum of £1500 for this event. (Harvest House is situated 2 houses down from the church towards the Village Hall)
